Birthday coming up and just second date!

Hi
I hit it off with a guy on the first date and we exchange a few texts, and we have scheduled a second date soon. But my confusion is that the second date is the day after his birthday. I considered buying him a book for $10 - a book by an author we both like - and it is unusual someone even likes the author. Is it too much? It feels weird to go empty-handed.
